Online stock practice

Suppose you have created several quantitative trading strategies, tested both the in-sample and out-of-sample performance of those strategies using free historical stock data, and found some of them are really profitable and have good sharpe ratio, what will you do next? put your real money into the stock market and start trading? Yes, you can, but you are in the danger of slippage risk of your mis-estimated model (or you even don't consider that for backtesting at all), which might kill your profit. (slippage is the difference between estimated transaction costs and the amount actually paid, or between the price you want to buy/sell and the price you indeed execute.) Many investment firms prefer to use paper trading (sometimes also called "virtual stock trading"), which  is a simulated trading process in which would-be investors can 'practice' investing without committing real money, to partly handle this issue. However, as individuals, we have difficulty in finding a third party willing to play paper trading with us.

What shall we do then? I personally prefer to try online option practice, which provides virtual money and considers the real stock market situation (bid, ask, etc.) and therefore is an excellent free trading practice. Today I introduce two online stock practice portal, one in English and one in Chinese: first one is trade Monster, registration is free and easy, simple filling in basic information you will get a personal account, compete in the $100,000 contest and play daily games. you are able to join a network, participate multiple contests, compete in weekly, monthly stock and option contests.

Ready? Become a Proactive Investor. Introducing tradeCYCLE from tradeMONSTER..

The other portal is http://www.cofool.com/, which is similar except the site is in Chinese and special trading rules of Chinese stock market are applied.

Have fun practice stock trading.

Hi abiao, do you know any R-based algo trading platform website? Since the mainstream website is often C++ or Java, like algodeal, collective2, etc..

Hi nychole, I am not aware of any R-based trading platform website, however, if you need R API for trading, you can find a package at http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/IBrokers/index.html, which provides native Raccess to Interactive Brokers Trader Workstation API. Several other useful trading packages are http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/TTR/index.html, http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/tradeCosts/index.html, http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/ttrTests/index.html, http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/fTrading/index.html. I don't try all of them, so it would be good if you test and share with us you thoughts, cheers.
